What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of healing which uses the same principles as acupuncture. Instead of using needles the practitioner applies pressure with hands, and sometimes knees and feet. The touch, pressure and manipulation correct the imbalance in the body and stabalise the energy flow. It aims to support and strengthen the body's innate ability to heal and balance itself, and treats the person as a whole, both physically and mentally. Shiatsu is a profoundly calming experience, regular treatments help the body's natural self healing processes to work more effectively, reducing stress and raising energy levels.

How does a typical session go?

You will usually be asked to lie on a futon (soft mat) on the floor. You will be fully clothed and the therapist applies pressure with hands, thumbs and sometimes knees and feet, along energy channels known as meridians. By working along meridians, the therapist enables energy to move to the places in need and disperses it from where it is congested, restoring balance to the whole body. Stretching techniques are also used to ease joint stiffness and pain and to re-align the structure of the body and stimulate the body's vital energy.

Loose comfortable clothing of natural fibre is recommended for this therapy. After your treatment you will have a sense of well-being and relaxation, you may sleep better and feel energised. It is beneficial to have a course of treatments as this produces long term benefits.
